Description of the overall project

Start off point of the project is the border crossing discussion of historical, political and cultural sites.

The first international student project Architecture of War was focused on the former military spaces in the greater region of Lorraine-Wallonia-Rhineland-Palatinate (between France, Belgium and Germany). After a one year work phase at the Universities of Metz, Liège and Trier all resulting projects had been exhibited in October 2007 in Trier.

In spring 2008 the focus upon remembrance will be put on the East European space. Cracow/Poland offers two specific districts covering different aspects within the historical, political and cultural context.

The Jewish district Kazimierz originally was an independent unit, separated from Cracow city by a tributary of the river Vistula. The majority of the population had been Yews before they were deported to the ghetto of Cracow by the German occupiers in 1941. After World War II the district and its history was forgotten and was rediscovered only by the fact that the movie “Schindler´s List” was partially produced in Kazimierz. Today many of the buildings are renovated and the quarter became a sight for visitors of Cracow.

Nowa Huta was planned and developed as a socialist city right beside the then biggest metallurgical plant in the entire world. Up to date Nowa Huta is the workers district of Cracow and starts to get into the focus of Cracow’s visitors…

Targets of all participating partners..

Specification

Workshops with students of all participating universities will be based on discussions of themes of specific regional and design orientated relevance. In this context the interdisciplinary and border crossing implementation of the IP signifies an improvement compared with other actions and programmes so far and can be regarded as most valuable for the education in designing disciplines.

Students will be learning from one another and together with the teachers of the all participating universities they will be able to explore and enlarge their educational horizon. At the same time students will be offered the opportunity to investigate the social relevance and the concrete application of their proposals and projects in discussions with representatives of different sections within the City Council and also via the public exhibition/documentation of the projects.
All these are important aspects referring to the future professional expertise of a “designer”.

Method

The core of the IP consists in the development of design orientated projects reflecting the theme “Spaces of Remembrance – Intercultural Places” within the scope of the overall programme. Under the guidance of teachers from international universities different workshops will take place in the studios of the Academy of Fine Arts Cracow. In stage 1 of the IP the two chosen districts, Kazimierz and Nowa Huta, will be explored. Depending on the demands of the work groups and the progress of the following design process, stage 1 can be extended by further fieldtrips, lectures and discussions.
Precise contents and a schedule will be set up after the visit of chief-coordinator Prof. Anna Bulanda-Pantalacci in Cracow in February 2008.
